From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A sewing machine is a textile machine used to stitch fabric or other material together with thread. Sewing machines were invented during the first Industrial Revolution to decrease the amount of manual sewing work performed in clothing companies. Since the invention of the first working sewing machine, generally considered to have been the work of Englishman Thomas Saint in 1790, the sewing machine has vastly improved the efficiency and productivity of fabric and clothing industries. Though some older machines use a chain stitch, the basic stitch of a modern sewing machine consists of two threads and is known as lockstitch. Industrial machines are usually specialized for a specific task, and so different machines may produce a different type of stitch. Modern sewing machines are designed in such a way that the fabric easily glides in and out of the machine without the hassle of needles and thimbles and other such tools used in hand sewing, automating the process of stitching and saving time. The fabric shifting mechanism may be a simple workguide or may be pattern-controlled (e.g., jacquard type). Some machines can create embroidery-type stitches. Some have a work holder frame. Some have a workfeeder that can move along a curved path, while others have a workfeeder with a work clamp. Needle guards, safety devices to prevent accidental needle-stick injuries, are often found on modern sewing machines. When the machines started being used, people realized a stitch more suited to machine production was needed, and it was found in the lock stitch. A lock stitch is created by two separate threads interlocking through the two layers of fabric, resulting in a sturdier stitch that looks the same from both sides of the fabric. GNU Free Documentation License What is the best sewing machine for heavy duty sewing? Q. I am hoping to get recommendations on a good sewing machine for heavy duty sewing. Something in between a home machine and an industrial as I am not ready to commit to a huge industrial machine but I sew much more then what a standard home machine can handle. For example heavy fabrics such as canvas, upholstery weight, or denim and I sew for 5plus hours per day. Asked by haelleah - Mon Aug 18 17:09:22 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Great machines for this is to find an old Singer (black ones) from 1940's and 50's. One of the best if not the best is a Singer 201. Along with this one is a Singer 15-91. These are heavy household machines that have a built in motor (no belt drive). All gear to gear drive and you cannot hurt them. Almost any machine with the proper TNT (Thread, Needle and Tension) can sew heavy materials just not for very long. These two types can sew heavy all day, every day. I always buy these when I see them. Service them (restore) and resell them. Feel free to email me if you want to buy one. About a hundred dollars. I'll ad links so you can look at some. Page through my pics you will see a 15-91 and a 201. Others are eBay machines. I have them for… [cont.] Answered by Rick - Fri Aug 22 09:29:19 2008 What kind of Sewing Machine is good for thick fabrics, like denim? Q. I am looking to get a sewing machine to put patches on my husbands jeans and to make clothes and blankets for my daughter. Which Sewing Machine should I get? I want one that will last a long time. Where should I get the Sewing Machine? I am looking on Amazon.com right now. Asked by nicki - Mon May 5 03:11:04 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Find an older, all metal machine at a thriftstore, and have it serviced at a local sewing machine repair place. You can probably do this for under $100. These older machines are very tough and will last a long time, unlike today's plastic machines. Look for one that has metal gears, like a Singer 400 and 500 series. The metals gears will give it plenty of power to go through heavy material. DO use the right needles, like size 16 or 18 jeans needles, they have a sharp point to penetrate better. They might also have cams to make decorative stitches on clothes for your daughter. Enjoy!
